Description

Within the conduct of a high-stakes interview, verbal communication exists on three levels: (1) what the interviewee said, (2) what the interviewee wanted to say and (3) what the interviewer heard and processed. The interviewing goal is for the interviewer to move to level three as close to level one as possible. However, within the narrative, there are linguistic features, which, to the informed and attentive interviewer, can provide a conduit to a deeper understanding of the mindset of the interviewee. Having gained this insight, the interviewer can incorporate awareness into the conduct of the interview, increasing the opportunity for a positive interview outcome.
